Why AI Recommendations Vary by Prompt, Location, or Platform

AI recommendations aren't a fixed ranking. Prompt wording, location, and the platform's sources all change which businesses an answer names.

An AI recommendation is not necessarily a fixed position in a universal list. The answer may change when the question changes, when the system interprets the question differently, or when it draws on different information and sources.

Prompt wording can change the question

“Who is a good accountant?” and “Which accountant helps small businesses file taxes in Austin?” are asking for different things. The more specific prompt may lead the system toward different businesses, criteria, or sources.

Some AI search experiences also rewrite or expand a prompt before searching. OpenAI, for example, says ChatGPT Search may rewrite a question into one or more targeted queries. So the original wording is not necessarily the only wording used to find information.

Location can influence local results

A question about a provider “near me” may depend on the user’s approximate location. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may use approximate location information to provide relevant local results. Adding a specific city or service area to a prompt can therefore produce a different result from asking the same question without a location.

Different platforms may draw on different sources

AI products can use different search systems, retrieval methods, sources, and ways of presenting answers. A page cited by one platform may not be cited by another. Results can also vary within a platform.

Google has described query fan-out in its AI search features, where a question may be explored through related searches. That can bring in a different mix of pages than a single straightforward search.

How to compare results responsibly

When testing AI visibility, record the exact platform, prompt, date, and location context. Compare repeated observations rather than treating one answer as a permanent ranking. Freshness and platform changes may be worth considering, but a difference between two answers does not, by itself, establish what caused it.

The goal of monitoring is to identify patterns, factual errors, and questions your website could answer more clearly, not to assume that every customer will see the same response.
