Will AI Overviews Hurt Your "Near Me" Leads? What Local Service Businesses Should Know
Not so far for the most urgent, high-intent local searches. Searches like "emergency plumber near me" have been among the least affected by AI Overviews, and the businesses that show up in AI answers tend to be those already strong in local results.
The short answer: Not so far for the most urgent, high-intent local searches. Searches like "emergency plumber near me" have been among the least affected by AI Overviews, and the businesses that show up in AI answers tend to be those already strong in local results. But AI-style local results are growing, they often show fewer businesses, and research-stage questions are where AI Overviews appear most. Watching it and preparing is sensible.
What AI Overviews are
Google's AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear above or alongside traditional results. They're built from several sources, including Google's own business and place data, and they can name sources and businesses directly. Google also offers an AI Mode for longer, more conversational searches.
They are different from the traditional local pack, the map-based box of three nearby businesses. The local pack rewards proximity, review signals, and profile completeness. AI Overviews are built to answer questions, so they behave differently depending on the type of search.
Which searches are affected most
Analyses of AI Overviews generally find a split:
- Urgent, geo-specific searches ("HVAC repair [city]," "roofing contractor near me") are substantially less likely to trigger AI Overviews. Customers searching this way usually want a number to call now.
- Research-stage and informational searches ("how long does a roof last," "what should I look for when hiring a plumber," "how much does a new water heater cost") are much more likely to trigger one.
That means the first thing a homeowner reads, while still deciding whether and whom to hire, may increasingly be an AI summary.
The newer concern: AI local packs
Local-search researcher Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky reported in January 2026 that AI-powered local packs, which can replace the traditional three-pack, appeared on roughly 8% of local keywords at the time of her research, and that they often show only one or two businesses. In the markets she analyzed, the number of visible businesses declined in most of them. That's one analysis at one moment, and the numbers will move, but it shows why a top-three finish matters more, and why not being named can cost more than it used to.
What this means for your lead flow
- Your Google Business Profile is still central. In a world with fewer visible results, a complete, active profile with strong reviews is often the thing a customer sees. See Google reviews and Business Profile.
- Research-stage content is a new opening. Questions that trigger AI Overviews often have no map result. If your site publishes the clearest local answer, you can be cited even there.
- Click-through may fall even when visibility holds. Studies have found AI Overviews can reduce clicks to websites. For local services, more value may arrive as phone calls, direction requests, and profile views than as site visits.
- Voice makes it sharper. Voice assistants give one answer, not a list. See voice search and the higher stakes of being chosen.
What to do about it
Protect the basics
- Complete and maintain your Google Business Profile.
- Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. See becoming a trusted entity.
- Collect recent, specific reviews.
Publish answers to the research-stage questions
Write pages that answer what homeowners ask before they call: typical costs, how long a job takes, what affects price, how to choose a contractor, signs you need a repair or a replacement. Use local specifics, such as permit rules, soil or climate conditions, and neighborhoods you serve. Lead with the direct answer, then explain. This is the practice behind answer engine optimization.
Add structure and FAQs
Clear headings, short answers, and FAQ sections with structured data help systems understand a page. See schema, llms.txt, and AI crawlers.
Show up beyond your website
Google's AI features draw on sources beyond your site, including video and local platforms. Our AI-crawlable mirrors approach spreads accurate details across places AI can read.
Measure it
Search your core services and research questions in Google, with and without AI features appearing, and note who is named. Track calls and direction requests alongside web visits.
What not to panic about
AI Overviews haven't ended local search. Customers who need a plumber tonight still search for one and call. The risk is gradual: the earlier, research-stage moments, where preferences form, are shifting toward AI answers. A business that is present there has an advantage.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews appear for "plumber near me"? That type of search has been among the less likely to trigger one, though formats keep changing.
Will fewer people click my website? Possibly. Plan to measure calls, direction requests, and profile actions as well as visits.
Do I need separate content for AI Overviews? Not separate. Clear, specific answer pages that serve customers also serve AI systems.
Should I stop investing in local SEO? No. Strong local rankings often correlate with who appears in AI results. See SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO.
