SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What's the Difference?
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content become the direct answer.
The short answer: SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content become the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) helps AI systems cite and recommend your brand in generated responses. In practice they overlap heavily, and many providers use AEO and GEO interchangeably. We use "AI visibility" as the umbrella term for all of it.
The three terms in plain language
SEO (search engine optimization) is the older discipline: earning rankings, clicks, and traffic from results pages on Google and Bing. It covers technical health, on-page content, and off-page authority such as links and mentions.
AEO (answer engine optimization) grew out of the featured-snippet era. It focuses on structuring content so that a search engine, voice assistant, or AI tool can lift a clear, direct answer from it. Think question-and-answer formatting, concise definitions, and structured data. See our guide to answer engine optimization.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is a term from 2024 research on improving a source's visibility inside generative AI responses. In marketing, it usually means earning citations, mentions, and favorable descriptions in tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI features.
How they compare
| | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|----|----|----|----|
| Main goal | Rank in search results | Be the direct answer | Be cited and recommended in AI responses |
| Typical success measures | Rankings, traffic, clicks | Snippets, answer boxes, voice answers | Mentions, citations, share of AI answers |
| Where it shows up | Search results pages | Answer boxes, AI Overviews, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Work involved | Technical SEO, content, links | Structured, question-led content | Entity clarity, third-party mentions, source-ready content |
Why the lines blur
Most AI tools still rely on the same crawled and indexed web that SEO helped build. Good content, clear structure, and a trustworthy reputation help in all three. Providers also invent more labels for the same work: LLMO, LLM SEO, AI SEO, and others. Instead of worrying about which acronym is correct, ask what a provider will deliver and how they measure it.
A useful way to think about it is as a stack:
- SEO is the foundation. Your site must be crawlable, fast, and credible.
- AEO makes your content quotable. Clear questions, direct answers.
- GEO builds the wider footprint. Reviews, directories, mentions, and consistent facts that make an AI confident enough to recommend you.
Does AI visibility replace SEO?
No. Strong traditional visibility still supports AI visibility, and for urgent local searches such as "plumber near me," classic local results remain important. But ranking alone no longer tells the whole story. An assistant may name two businesses in a paragraph and stop, and you might rank third on Google yet never be mentioned.
So the practical position is: keep your SEO foundation, and add the layers that help assistants find, understand, and trust you.
Where voice search fits
Voice assistants usually give one answer, not a list, which raises the stakes for being the chosen business. That's why AEO and voice work together. See voice search and the higher stakes of being chosen.
What this means for a local service business
You don't need three separate strategies. For most local businesses, one coordinated program covers all of it:
- Accurate, consistent business details everywhere. See becoming a trusted entity.
- Pages that answer customers' questions directly.
- A complete Google Business Profile and a steady flow of specific reviews.
- Presence beyond your website, through AI-crawlable mirrors and third-party coverage.
- Ongoing measurement of what assistants say about you.
How to evaluate a provider using these terms
When a company pitches SEO, AEO, or GEO, ask:
- What exactly will you deliver each month?
- How will we measure progress, and across which assistants?
- How will you handle off-site mentions and listings, not just my website?
- What don't you control? Anyone guaranteeing placement should raise a red flag.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as AEO? They describe substantially the same work under different names. The difference is mostly emphasis: AEO leans toward extractable answers, GEO toward citations and brand mentions in generative responses.
Do I need to choose one? No. A single program that strengthens your foundation, your answers, and your wider footprint covers all three.
Is SEO dead? No. Visibility now has more layers, and SEO remains one of them.
